When will you receive your refund? The answer depends on how you filed your return.  If you filed electronically, your federal tax refund generally will be issued within one or two weeks.  Direct deposit to your bank account occurs at that time, usually on a Friday.

If you mailed your return on paper, the IRS should issue your refund check within six to eight weeks after they receive it. Direct deposit will shorten this time frame somewhat.

State tax refunds vary in the length of time required.  Iowa refunds for e-filed returns are quite fast, sometimes beating the federal refund to your bank account.  State returns filed on paper may take quite a while to pay out, since the returns must be processed by hand.
